Frigate commands are always in high demand.  Well-connected families fight tooth and nail to get one for their sons, while the Admiralty tries to shepherd their proteges through a command tour on one as an acid test for their suitability for bigger and better postings later on.  Why all the fuss? Frigates get plenty of excitement in the little skirmishes and police actions that fall short of full blown war, and if you can capture a pirate or an enemy privateer, the officers and crew get a share of the profits from its sale.  While everyone else is attached to a task force or sitting at anchor in orbit over one of the Core Worlds waiting for a war that may never come, the frigates are out there on the borders, showing the flag, collecting intelligence, and serving as the trip wire against invasion.  Spend your career on a cruiser and you can bore friends and family alike with the same arid tales of wargames and exercises and the travails of shipyard availabilities.  Spend a tour on a frigate and you'll never buy another drink in a bar again.

This is a bit of an omake, an extra from the commission for .  I realized that the bow section of the cruiser/carrier models could easily serve as its own spacecraft with just a little modification, and set out to do it. Thus, the frigate.
